HELPING HANDS FOOD PANTRY DISTRIBUTION
Helping Hands Food Pantry is part of a nationwide program, "Feeding America" and a regional program, "God's Pantry." Each Wednesday the Senior Center picks up food donations from local vendors (like Walmart and Kroger) that are ear the expiration date and distributes these items to anyone over 18 years of age who comes to the Center.

CRUISE ON THE THOROBRED BOAT
Wednesday, August 22, 9:15 a.m. 
Join us for a free cruise on the Kentucky River as Ed Wilcox, KSU, tells us all about the river, its uses, the watershed and how storm water affects the river. The boat has rest rooms, air conditioning and plenty of space to sit down. Access to the boat is NOT handicap accessible. Cruise will last approximately 1 1/2 hours. We'll load the Center but at 9:15 a.m. for the 10 a.m. cruise. If you prefer, you may meet us at the dock on Wilkinson Blvd. Either way, call the Center, 223-5794, or stop by Roxann's desk to sign up NLT August 10. Limit 45. 

DIABETES SUPPORT GROUP
Thursday, August 23, 4:30 p.m.
Have you been diagnosed with diabetes and have questions about your care and/or diet? In partnership with the Franklin County Health Department, the Center is starting a diabetes support group for people of all ages. It will meet the 4th Thursday of each month at 4:30 p.m. 

PLUMBING SCAMS & HOW TO RECOGNIZE THEM

David Moore, Director of KY Division of Plumbing will join us to talk about plumbing scams. How can you recognize a scammer? And who do you hire when you have plumbing needs?

MORE HERBS, LESS SALT

Has your doctor told you to reduce the salt in your diet, but when yo try food isn't very tasty? Kathy Reynolds, Dietician at FRMC, will provide tips about how to substitute spices and herbs for salt in your diet. Food can taste better with less salt. 

A MATTER OF BALANCE
Wednesdays, 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. (8 sessions)
This program is an award-winning program designed to manage falls and increase activity levels. This 8-week series emphasizes practical strategies and exercises, how to view falls as controllable, and how to make changes to reduce fall risks at home. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required. Please register by calling the Center (502-223-5794) or email Anne Robbins at arobbins@fccoa.com. Class limited to 20 participants. 

TRIP TO FARMERS' MARKET
Tuesday, September 4, 10 a.m.
On the second Tuesday of each month, we'll be making a trip to the Farmer's Market. Hop on the bus and check out the wonderful, fresh produce and items available. What's available will be different each week.

SENIOR GAMES FUN DAY
Friday, September 7, 10 a.m.
Play shuffleboard, bocce ball, corn hole, badminton, putting for fun at 10 a.m. Then return for fun day.
SENIOR GAMES FUN DAY  3-8 p.m. 
Watch the competitions of billiards, shuffleboard, corn hole and bocce ball. Visit the vendor tables. And stay for dinner. Dinner available for purchase.

SENIOR COMPANION PROGRAM

Laura Isaacs, the new director of the program,, will explain the Senior Companion Program. There are opportunities for being a companion as well as receiving companion care.

TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF AS YOU CARE FOR OTHERS

Are you care taking a loved one? Do you often have questions and don't know where to turn? Tamera Thomas, Franklin Co. Extension Office, will join us to talk about the importance of taking care of yourself in stressful times. From personal experience she can talk about tips to help you.

WALGREEN'S FLU SHOT CLINIC

It's not too early to think about protecting yourself from the flu. If you would like to get your flu shot, bring your Medicare Card and your Medicare Plan D Card (if you have one). If you do not have a Medicare card, please bring your Insurance Card. If you don't have any insurance, check with the pharmacist that day.

BOOK GROUP

This month's book selection is Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. Jacob, a veterinary student before he jumped on a passing train, finds himself with a struggling, second-rate traveling circus during the Depression. He cares for the circus menagerie. There he meets Marlena, the star of the equestrian act, her husband August, the animal trainer, and Rosie, a seemingly untrainable elephant, until he finds a way to reach her. It's a story of love in a world where love is a luxury. Books to loan are available at the Center. 

KSU NUTRITION: VEGETABLES FOR EVERY BODY

Gidgett and our friends from Kentucky State University Cooperative Extension Program will join us to talk about quick and healthy breakfasts and then they'll demonstrate and we'll taste Southwestern Vegetable Salad. 

MINUTE TO WIN IT

Join in the monthly competition. Marchele and Jim will choose games that will challenge your dexterity for sure.

ASSESSING YOUR FALLS RISK

September is Falls Awareness month. Friends from RehabCare will help you assess your falls risk and talk about ways you might lessen your risk and adopt less fall-risky habits.
